چکیده

Superplastic structural ceramics (Y-TZP, A1203, Si3N4, and their composites) that can withstand biaxial stretching to large strains have been developed recently. Microstructural design of these ceramics first requires an ultrafine grain size that is stable against coarsening during sintering and deformation. A low sintering temperature is a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition for achieving the required microstructure. In many cases, the selection of an appropriate phase, such as tetragonal phase in zirconia or a phase in silicon nitride, which is resistant to grain growth, is crucial. The use of sintering aids and grain-growth inhibitors, particularly those that segregate to the grain boundaries, can be beneficial. Second-phase particles are especially effective in suppressing static and dynamic grain growth. Another major concern is to maintain an adequate grain-boundary cohesive strength, relative to the flow stress, to mitigate cavitation or grain-boundary cracking during large strain deformation. Existing evidence suggests that a lower grainboundary energy is instrumental in achieving this objective. The selection of an appropriate phase and the tailoring of the grain boundary or liquid-phase composition can sometimes drastically alter the cavitation resistance. Related observations on forming methods, forming characteristics, and sheet formability are also reviewed. The basic deformation characteristics are similar to diffusional creep and are dominated by

Superplastic deformation in carbonate apatite ceramics under constant compressive loading for near-net-shape production of bioresorbable bone substitutes.

To produce carbonate apatite (CAP) ceramics with the desired complex shapes using superplastic deformation, deformation behavior of CAP ceramics under constant loading as well as physical properties after deformation were evaluated. Sintered CAP ceramics were plastically deformed in an electric furnace attached to a universal hydraulic testing machine under a constant load. CAP ceramics subject...

Superplastic Flow of Two-Phase Ceramics Containing Rigid lnclusions— Zirconia/Mullite Composites

A continuum theory for non-Newtonian flow of a two-phase composite containing rigid inclusions is presented. I t predicts flow suppression by a factor of (1 V)p, where V is the volume fraction of the rigid inclusion and q depends on the stress exponent and the inclusion shape. Stress concentrations in the rigid inclusion have also been evaluated. As the stress exponent increases, flow suppressi...

Deformation and Grain Growth of Low-Temperature-Sintered High-Purity Alumina

The static grain growth of this material was modest at temperatures below 1300°C. However, dynamic grain growth occurred rapidly during superplastic deformation. Therefore, although the ultrafine-grained alumina...

Preparation of Ultra Fine Grained Magnesia Ceramics and the Temperature and Porosity Dependence of Their Fracture Behaviour

Fine grain polycrystals of MgO have been prepared from a Mg(OH)2 powder by reactive hot-pressing at 900°C. The densification rate is discussed in terms of superplastic deformation. The bend strength and the effective surface energy for fracture initiation y. have been determined as a function of porosity between room temperature and112000~. A rapid increase in yi with temperature is observed ab...

Hot compaction of nanocrystalline TiO2 (anatase) ceramics. Mechanisms of densification: Grain size and doping effects

The hot compaction of nanocrystalline TiO2 anatase powders is investigated using dilatometry. The constant rate of heating (CRH) method is applied to determine effective activation energies of the processes involved during sintering. Grain size and doping effects are studied, using dopant cations of different radius and charge: Zn, Al, Si, Nb. The results are interpreted by a mechanism includin...
